Four A200 Battery Messages and What Each One Means
We start our test from the exact wording on your display, because on the A200 each message points somewhere different.
- Auxiliary Battery MalfunctionThe transmission's auxiliary battery has stopped being charged. Until it is put right, select P by hand before switching off and apply the electric parking brake.
- 12 V Battery, Engine OffCharge is too low with the engine stopped. Turn off anything not needed, then run the engine for a few minutes or take a longer drive.
- Battery Not Being ChargedThe 2019 manual says to stop driving and have the car checked, which points us at the charging side as well as the battery.
- Stop Vehicle, Leave Engine RunningThe charge level is too low. Pull over safely, keep the engine running and wait for the message to clear before setting off again.

Two 12 V Batteries, One of Them Out of Sight
We test both 12 V batteries on an A200, not only the one under the bonnet. Mercedes-Benz marks a second 12 V battery under the front cabin floor on the W177 A 200 and under the front floor on the W176, so a healthy engine-bay battery does not clear the car.
On a W177 built with the 48-volt system there is a third, lithium-ion battery in the boot. Knowing which of the three a symptom belongs to is what keeps the right part, and only that part, on the invoice.
Settings to Check Once the New A200 Battery Is In
Most of the car remembers itself. These are the items the A-Class manuals ask you to look at after the battery has been disconnected.
Service Due Date
On a W177, ASSYST PLUS cannot count while the battery is out. Note the due date shown on the display before disconnection.
Outside Mirrors
The 2019 manual says the mirrors need resetting before automatic folding works again: a brief press of the fold button.

Mercedes A200 Battery Questions
On the W177 A200 sold from 2018, an AGM battery: the 2019 owner's manual says full vehicle functionality is only guaranteed with one. On the earlier W176, we read the label on the fitted battery and match its type and size. Replacement starts from AED 175 fitted, and the new battery carries our 1-year warranty.
Both the 2016 and the 2019 A-Class manuals tie that message to the auxiliary battery for the transmission, which is no longer being charged. It is not the starter battery. Until it is fixed, shift to P by hand before switching off, and apply the electric parking brake before you leave the car.

Neither the 2016 nor the 2019 A-Class owner's manual lists a coding step for the 12 V battery. What the 2019 manual does ask is that the ASSYST PLUS service date is noted before disconnection and the outside mirrors are reset afterwards. Anything further your car needs, we explain at booking.
It can, through the jump-start connection point in the engine bay, which both A-Class manuals name for jump-starting and for charging. The 2019 manual adds that a petrol A200 should only take starting assistance with the engine and exhaust cold, and that any charger must stay at or below 14.8 V.
