Battery at rest
Engine off, the battery's voltage is read and it is load-tested, so a weak battery is never blamed on the alternator.
We test the battery and the charging system side by side where the car is parked, so you pay to fix the part that failed, not the one that took the blame. The alternator recharges the battery and runs the electrics while you drive; when its output drops, even a new battery goes flat. Worn brushes, bearings and regulators are replaced on the spot where the unit allows it, and the price is agreed first.
We put a digital meter across the battery terminals twice, engine off and engine running, before anything is unbolted:
| Reading | What it means | Engine |
|---|---|---|
| About 12.6V | A charged, healthy battery at rest | Off |
| 12.2V or lower | Battery about half charged; charge it and test again | Off |
| About 13.8 to 14.7V | The charging system is doing its job | Running |
| Still low with headlights and blower on | Alternator, regulator or belt not keeping up | Running |
| Well above 14.7V | Regulator overcharging, which heats the battery and boils off its water | Running |
| Ripple on the charging line | A failed rectifier diode or stator winding | Running |
On cars whose engine computer sets the charging voltage, a low reading at idle can be normal, so every reading is repeated at raised revs and under load before we call it a fault.

Book a free charging-system test when you notice any of these:
The battery warning lamp glows on the dashboard while you drive
Headlights that dim at idle, or flare brighter as the revs rise
A battery that goes flat again soon after a jump or a recharge
Windows, radio or dashboard displays behaving erratically
A whine that rises with engine speed, or a grinding bearing
A smell of hot rubber or a squeal from a slipping belt
Bulbs blowing more often than they should, or a battery that runs hot
We trace a flat battery to its cause before we sell you anything. The alternator, turned by the engine's accessory belt, runs the lights, fans, air conditioning and control units while you drive and tops up the battery with what is left. A loose belt or a worn tensioner slips and undercharges even when the alternator is sound, so the belt is checked first.
Inside the alternator, the carbon brushes and bearings wear and the voltage regulator fails outright, and each can be replaced on its own where the unit allows it. Fitting a new car battery to a weak alternator only buys time: the new one is drained the same way as the old one.

Worn carbon brushes, noisy bearings and a failed voltage regulator are replaced on their own where the unit allows it, so you are not sold a whole alternator for one worn part.
When the alternator is beyond repair, a replacement matched to your make, model and engine is fitted where the car is parked, and its output is tested before we leave.

A slipping belt, a worn tensioner or a corroded earth strap can look exactly like a failed alternator. Each is checked first and replaced when it is the real cause.

Months of undercharging leave a battery sulphated and weak. It is load-tested alongside the alternator, so you do not leave with one fault fixed and the other waiting.
On some Ford, BMW, Mazda and Peugeot models, among others, the engine computer sets the charging voltage and lowers it when the battery is full or warm. We read those cars at idle, at raised revs and under load, so a normal low reading is not mistaken for a failed alternator.

Many hybrids have no belt-driven alternator: a converter steps the high-voltage battery down to charge the 12V battery. When that 12V battery keeps going flat, we test it and tell you plainly whether the fault lies in the battery or in the hybrid system.
Engine off, the battery's voltage is read and it is load-tested, so a weak battery is never blamed on the alternator.
The charging voltage is read at idle, then with the engine held at higher revs.
With the headlights and blower on, the reading shows whether the alternator keeps up when the car asks the most of it, and a ripple check shows whether a rectifier diode has failed.
The same readings are taken again before we leave. Old parts go for recycling, and what was found and fitted is written on your receipt.

The price for your car is quoted on the phone before anyone sets off, and there is no call-out fee.
Only for a short distance. Once the alternator stops charging, the car runs on the battery alone until it is drained, and then the engine and electrics cut out. Switch off the air conditioning and other loads, park somewhere safe and call us, so the car is tested where it stands.
On any modern car, yes. In the UAE, "dynamo" is the everyday name for the alternator: the belt-driven unit that charges the battery and runs the electrics while the engine is on. Book under either name and we test and repair the same charging system.
It depends on what the test finds: a belt or a regulator costs less than a new alternator, and parts vary by make and model. There is no call-out fee, the battery and charging-system tests are free, and you hear the price before any part is fitted.
Our alternator repairs carry a 1-year warranty on parts and labour, so both the part we fit and the work of fitting it are covered. What was found and what was fitted are written on your receipt, and that receipt is all you need if the fault comes back within the year.
It depends on what the test finds: a belt or a regulator is quicker than a whole alternator, and you hear the expected time with the quote.
Only if repair is not possible. Brushes, bearings and regulators are replaced on their own where the unit allows it.
Often. A glazed or loose belt slips and undercharges, and it is far cheaper to replace, which is why it is checked first.
Yes, free of charge, along with the charging system. The battery is load-tested as part of every alternator check, because months of undercharging can leave it too weak to trust even after the alternator is fixed. If it fails, you hear the price of a replacement, from AED 175 fitted, before anything is changed.
Yes. An alternator that undercharges leaves the battery short of charge, and a battery kept that way sulphates and loses capacity. A failed regulator does the opposite: it overcharges, heats the battery and boils off its water. That is why both are tested together before anything is replaced.
On many newer cars the engine computer, not the alternator, sets the charging voltage. It lowers the voltage when the battery is full or warm and raises it under load, so one low reading is not proof of a fault. We read the system at idle, at raised revs and under load before we call it a fault.
Many do not. Their 12V battery is charged by a converter from the high-voltage system, so a flat 12V battery calls for a different diagnosis.
