Mercedes-AMG A45 Battery Replacement in Dubai, Both 12 V AGMs

We get a flat A45 running again, or fit it with a new battery, where it stands, working the way Mercedes-Benz sets out for this car. The W177 A45 and A45 S carry two 12 V AGM batteries and, unlike a 48-volt A35, no 48 V battery, so the battery work on this model is all on the 12 V side.

W176 A 45 AMG

2013 - 2018

W177 A 45 4MATIC+

2019 - 2022

Two 12 V AGM batteries, one under a cover in the engine bay, one below the front cabin floor.

W177 A 45 S 4MATIC+

2019 onward

The same pair of 12 V AGM batteries, and no 48 V battery, unlike a 48-volt A 35 built alongside it.

Two 12 V AGM Batteries and No 48 V Pack

We test both 12 V batteries on an A45, since the car depends on the pair and each can fail on its own.

  • Engine-Bay AGMThe 12 V battery under a cover at the front of the car, reached with the bonnet up.
  • Cabin-Floor AGMA second 12 V AGM below the front of the cabin. It has its own test and, when needed, its own replacement.
  • Nothing in the BootWhere a 48-volt A 35 adds a lithium-ion battery, Mercedes-Benz draws none on the A 45 or A 45 S.
  • AGM Both TimesMercedes-Benz labels both 12 V batteries AGM, and AGM is what replaces either of them.

How it works

Jump-Starting an A45 the Way Mercedes Sets Out

This is the sequence in the 2019 A-Class owner's manual, and the one we follow at the car.

Secure the Car

Electric parking brake on, transmission in P, ignition and every electrical consumer off, bonnet open.

Positive First

Positive clamp on the A45's jump-start point first, then to the donor battery's positive pole.

Earth Point Last

Donor running at idle, its negative pole goes to the A45's ground point, donor end first.

Load On Before Leads Off

Engines run for several minutes, a consumer such as the rear window heater goes on, then the leads come off.

Rapid Chargers Stay Away From an A45

We start a flat A45 with a 12 V source and nothing else. The 2016 A-Class manual rules out a rapid charging device for starting the car, and both A-Class manuals cap any charger at 14.8 V and send charging through the jump-start connection point rather than the battery posts.

A charger with no voltage limit can damage the battery or the electronics, the 2019 manual warns.

What We Check on an A45 Before Replacing Anything

  • The engine-bay AGM under load

  • The cabin-floor AGM on its own

  • Charging voltage with the engine running

  • Terminals and clamps for looseness or corrosion

  • The date and type printed on the fitted batteries

  • Any battery message on the display, word for word

Questions

Mercedes-AMG A45 Battery Questions

Mercedes-Benz shows two 12 V AGM batteries on the W177 A45 and A45 S: one in the engine bay and one under the front cabin floor. The earlier W176 A45 also has two 12 V batteries marked, in the engine bay and under the front floor. We test each one before replacing either.

No. Mercedes-Benz draws a 48 V lithium-ion battery in the boot of a 48-volt A35 but none on the W177 A45 or A45 S. On the A45, every battery we deal with is a 12 V AGM, which keeps the job simpler and the parts list shorter.

It can, through the jump-start connection point in the engine bay, using a 12 V donor battery only. The 2019 A-Class manual has the parking brake applied, P selected and every consumer off first, then positive clamp on, earth point last. On a petrol car, the engine and exhaust should be cold.

Only with a charger tested and approved by Mercedes-Benz, limited to 14.8 V, connected at the jump-start point in the engine bay. The A-Class manuals warn that a charger without a voltage limit can damage the battery or the electronics. If the battery will not hold charge, we replace it on site.

Replacement starts from AED 175 fitted, and the final figure depends on which of the two 12 V AGM batteries your A45 needs. Each new battery is covered by our 1-year warranty, and the old one is taken away for recycling when the new one is in.
