2023 - 2025Mercedes announced in January 2023 that every petrol CLA would be a mild hybrid with an additional 48-volt system. The CLA250 keeps its two 12V AGMs and gains a 48V lithium-ion battery under a cover in the boot.

A 48V CLA250 Still Relies on Its 12V Batteries
The 48V battery added in 2023 powers the belt-driven starter-generator, which gives the CLA250 up to 10 kW of extra push when pulling away and lets the engine restart smoothly. Mercedes still fits both 12V AGM batteries to the same car, so a mild-hybrid CLA250 has three batteries to look after rather than one.
That is why the test on an updated CLA250 covers all three, and the result decides which battery, if any, is replaced.

How the New 12V Battery Goes Into a CLA250
The CLA owner's manuals set the rules, and the fitting follows them.
- AGM or Lithium-Ion, Never FloodedMercedes links the CLA's full functionality to an AGM or lithium-ion 12V battery in the 2022 manual, so a basic flooded battery is never offered as a cheaper swap.
- Fittings Moved AcrossVent hose, elbow fittings and terminal covers come off the old battery and go onto the new one, with the vent hose on the original side opening.
- Leads on the Right PointAny jump or charge goes through the connection point in the engine compartment, with the charger held to 14.8 V.
- Negative Off FirstThe negative terminal is released before the positive, as the CLA manual sets out, so the car's electronics are protected while the battery is out.
Mercedes CLA250 Battery Questions
If it was built after the January 2023 model update, yes. From then on every petrol CLA carried an extra 48-volt network, with a belt-driven starter-generator adding up to 10 kW. Earlier C118 and C117 cars have no 48V battery. Give us the year and we settle it on the call.
In the boot, under its own cover, according to Mercedes' rescue sheet for the CLA 250 Coupe. The two 12V AGM batteries sit elsewhere: one in the engine bay and one low in the cabin by the front seats. Our technician knows all three positions before arriving at your car.
Yes. The 2023 update added the 48V battery without removing either 12V AGM, so an updated CLA250 carries three batteries in total. Each one is tested on our visit, and you are quoted only for the battery that has actually failed, whether it sits under the bonnet, in the cabin or in the boot.
An AGM or a lithium-ion battery. The 2022 CLA owner's manual says full vehicle functionality is only guaranteed with one of those two types, and asks for the vent hose to stay on the battery's original opening. We match the type on the label of the battery coming out.
