Audi notes that a 48V car looks the same from outside as its 12V version, so the car itself is checked before a battery is chosen.
A Flat 12V Battery Can Lock the Boot It Sits Under
Audi points out that when the 12-volt supply is interrupted, the boot lid will not open even after the car is unlocked. On a Q5 or A6 whose battery lives under that boot floor, a completely flat battery means opening the lid from inside the car, using the manual release that model's owner's manual describes.

Audi describes four kinds of battery across its cars, and each one changes what the replacement has to be.
- 12V lead-acidThe usual starter battery in Audi models.
- 12V lithium-ionFitted instead of lead-acid on some models, so the technology is read off the fitted battery before anything is ordered.
- 48V lithium-ionThe mild-hybrid battery, a separate unit from the 12V starter battery and never swapped for it.

On the Q5 and SQ5 from 2025, Audi places the 12-volt battery under the luggage compartment floor, and mild-hybrid versions keep their 48-volt battery there too. We lift that floor wherever the car is, run the free test, and swap in a like-for-like battery straight away if it fails.
