Mazda says Q-85 and S-95 are designed for i-stop and i-ELOOP, and that only those types should be used for those systems to work correctly.
Mazda Battery Replacement Under the Battery Cover
Our technician lifts the battery cover, tests the battery in place and only then recommends a Mazda battery replacement. The CX-5 manual asks for that cover to come off before any battery maintenance, and it goes back on before we leave.

i-stop, GCC and Diesel Battery Questions
Mazda's manuals say only a Q-85, or an S-95 on the diesel, should be used to keep i-stop and i-ELOOP working correctly. A standard battery may fit the tray and still leave the stop-start system misbehaving. We read your car's label and fit the type its specification names.
The 2017 and 2018 CX-5 owner's manuals list a 12V-65Ah/20HR battery for SKYACTIV-G petrol cars sold in the Arab Gulf Cooperation Council market, marked as not for i-stop. An imported CX-5 can follow another market's entry, so we check the label before quoting a battery.
The SKYACTIV-D 2.2 diesel is listed with the S-95 type in the 2018 CX-5 manual. The Q-85 is the petrol i-stop type, so it is not the diesel's battery. Our technician confirms the engine at the car, and the S-95 is priced on the call beforehand.
The 2018 CX-5 manual allows a 12 V booster only and warns that 24 V can damage the starter and electrics. The second lead goes to a ground point away from the battery, not the negative terminal, and both engines run for about 3 minutes. It then advises an inspection, which starts with our free battery check at the car.
The 2018 CX-5 manual says to contact an Authorised Mazda Repairer for a battery replacement purchase, and later editions recommend one for the replacement. Should you book us, the battery we bring follows the type and rating in your Mazda's manual and on its label, and who fits it is your decision.
