MG 12V Battery Replacement at Home or Work
Our van carries the battery to your MG and the old one is checked in place. On a ZS, the new one goes into the front compartment, where MG's December 2023 manual for the ZS and ZS Hybrid+ places it. MG calls it maintenance-free: it never takes water, so the choice is only ever test, recharge or renew.

Earth point, not the negative post
Chargers and jump leads take their negative connection at the vehicle's earth point, so the battery sensor keeps an accurate charge reading.
Battery sensor left alone
Unplugging the battery sensor is for absolute necessity only, says MG, because it throws off the capacity calculation.
Four hours to settle
After the negative terminal is reconnected, the battery must rest for at least 4 hours before automatic Start/Stop returns.

Every MG battery replacement we do on a ZS ends with the same advice: expect the engine to keep running at the lights on the drive home. MG's manual keeps automatic Start/Stop disabled until the battery has rested for at least 4 hours after the negative terminal is reconnected, so nothing is wrong when it stays off that afternoon.
The manual adds that a battery of a different type or specification can affect automatic Start/Stop, which is why the replacement we fit matches the original.

Two Batteries in a ZS Hybrid+, One of Them Ours
- The 12V batteryOur visit covers this one, to check, recharge or renew it. A flashing low-voltage battery light means it is nearly flat and the car is cutting some loads; the manual says to start the car straight away to recharge it.
- The high-voltage packMG says only qualified personnel may work on the high-voltage system. It is never part of our visit.
- A steady warning lightIf the low-voltage battery light stays on rather than flashing, the manual says the charging system for that battery has failed, so a new battery alone will not solve it.

Keeping a Parked MG ZS Ready to Start
MG's advice for a car that will stand for a while:
For a long spell, disconnect the negative cable from the battery, with the car switched off
If the cable stays connected, drive or idle the car for more than half an hour each week
After a jump-start, drive for 1 to 2 hours with the lights and air conditioning off to rebuild the charge
Do not leave electrical equipment running for long with the engine off

MG Owners Ask About the 12V Battery
In the front compartment. MG's December 2023 owner's manual for the ZS and ZS Hybrid+ places the 12V battery there and calls it maintenance-free, so it never needs topping up. It is tested in place, and a failed one is swapped for a unit of identical type and specification.
MG's manual keeps automatic Start/Stop disabled until the battery has rested for at least 4 hours after the negative terminal is reconnected. An engine that keeps running at the lights for the rest of that day is expected. If Start/Stop has not returned after that, call us and we will recheck the battery.
The ZS manual points owners to a local authorised MG repairer for removal and fitting, and wants the new battery to match the original's type and specification. Book us and that specification is what we install; which workshop or technician does it is entirely up to you.
Yes. MG's manual routes the black lead to an earth point on the car, not to the battery's negative terminal, so the battery sensor's capacity reading is not upset. Afterwards it advises driving for 1 to 2 hours with comfort equipment off. If the battery will not hold charge, we test and replace it there.
Our work is limited to the 12V battery. On the ZS Hybrid+ the manual reserves the high-voltage system for qualified personnel, and it is never part of our visit. Tell us the exact model when you call, and we confirm the 12V battery and its price before setting off.
